So we are rapidly approaching the end of 2009 and I figured it would be prudent if I posted a list of some of the top albums of the year. I plan on going through each of these albums and giving them another quality listen and will soon have my Top 10 up.
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
Apostle of Hustle - Eats Darkness
Bob Dylan - Together Through Life
The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love
The Flaming Lips - Embryonic
God Help the Girl - God Help the Girl
Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
M. Ward - Hold Time
Mayer Hawthorne - A Strange Arrangement
Metric - Fantasies
The Most Serene Republic - ...And the Ever Expanding Universe
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - The Pains of Being Pure At Heart
Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Ray Davies - The Kinks Choral Collection
Röyksopp - Junior
The Thermals - Now We Can See
What a list! I plan on writing a blurb on each of these in the coming days and will have my Top 10 by the end of the month. What are your top albums for 2009?

Mayer Hawthorne - Strange Arrangement, Flaming Lips - Embryonic, Decemberists - Hazards of Love, God Help the Girl - GHtG, Volcano Choir - Unmap, Swell Season - Strict Joy, Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest. And a couple of albums that I've heard and liked but haven't really had the chance to fully absorb yet The King Khan & BBQ Show - Invisible Girl, David Bazan- Curse Your Branches.
ReplyDeleteIs it sad that I could only come up with 9? I guess I'm still stuck in 2008, because every album I wanted to put down was from at least a year ago. Sad day. Also, I thought that M. Ward album was kind of boring and I refuse to like Animal Collective because of the one song they made that annoyed me every time I heard it on The Current.
I put that M Ward up there as really faith in the guy, I haven't listened to it extensively and really find his other work to be enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteI've put all these albums into a play list on the ipod and it runs around 14 hours. I think this will be a month long process to widdle down into 10 of the best.
You should listen to the Decemberists album on it's own. I mean, the songs are good separately, but it sort of works best as one epic piece. Also, I listened to that M Ward record on NPR and it just seemed kind of dull. I mean, not bad really, just kind of 'meh'.
