Bar Stool Drunken Fool

Brad Hoshaw did this song last night at the Haiti Benefit. This is the only video I can find, but I really like the song.

  1. Music needs to speak to you in order to connect with it. Brad Hoshaw does not really connect with me. I've never played the "Bar Stool Drunken Fool." It just strikes me as sad bastard whiny music; oh no, I've made the same mistake again and again and again...

  2. Well, people write what they know. I mean, I'm not saying this is my favorite song of his (he did a really good new song last night as well - the tattoo song - that was obviously way more interesting and well written) but you also have to remember that he's a musician, and that he's writing music FOR people. You may not have ever experienced what he's singing about (and hell, he may not have either) but that doesn't mean that the majority of the public hasn't. Most people are fuck-ups. Most people CAN relate to this song. I think lyrics like this are fascinating. I appreciate simplicity, as long as it gets your point across and you're saying something worthwhile. I mean, musicians are essentially poets. Would you feel the same way about this song if it were presented to you in a different format (ie a piece of poetry)? I'm not trying to argue the genius of his music or anything like that, I'm just realizing how completely differently we listen to music. Anyway, this isn't the first song written about a one-night stand, or making the same mistakes over and over again, and it certainly won't be the last. Is it a masterpiece? Not so much. Is it catchy? Yes. Does it speak to me? Yes. In a way (and no, I've never had a one-night stand). All I'm saying is that I like the song.
    Rant over.

  3. My only point is that this music doesn't speak to me, I never said he was junk. I understand that it speaks to a lot of other people, but from my point of view it doesn't speak to me. If something doesn't connect with me on the level that art should, then I tend not to enjoy it. Should I like something because everyone else likes it? Hoshaw has talent, that is certain, but I don't think his music speaks to me, in fact, I find that most music of that style fails at connecting with me. Because of this lack of connection I do what other humans do, and lump it together with everything else. I won't go out and say that I am the authority of music, I am completely willing to admit that sad songs on the acoustic guitar is just about the last thing you'll hear me listening too.

Listen to that Vampire Weekend, totally different in style and presentation than It's True or Brad Hoshaw. I would understand why you may not like it, it isn't your style, but it is my style. And my style is what matters most to me.
